IFP Presents: From Napkin to Action - Screenwriters Group Meeting
Next Thursday, 2/16/2012 – The IFP Phoenix Screenwriters Group meeting this month features Creative Director of Reister, Troy Pottgen to cover all things in the advertising industry. The Screenwriters Group meetings are always open to the public, and are free.

Troy Pottgen, Group Creative Director at RIESTER, will share the work involved in advertising campaigns–from a thought scribbled on a napkin to a fully-realized campaign–and explain the role you as a writer, director, DP, producer or anyone in between can play in the process.
Price: FREE to the Public!
When: Thursday, February 16
Time: 7:00PM – 9:00PM

LOCATION PHOTOS
Did you know that you can submit your location photos to the Phoenix Film Office?
When producers or production companies contact our office seeking locations, we create a link and send them as many photos as we have in our database in an effort to bring them to Phoenix to hire locals and spend locally.
Unfortunately, we do not have everything and here is where you can help!
Submit your location photos (high res-jpegs) to the Phoenix Film Office and we will be sure to include them in the link we generate should they match the request. You are encouraged to watermark the photos with your company contact information so we identify the photographer and the Producer may contact you directly (potentially great advertising for a location scout…).
To submit photos, either email them to filmphx@phoenix.gov or create a CD and mail it to:

Hooding Parking Meters
Did you know that the Phoenix Film Office can hood meters for you at no charge?
Recently the City of Phoenix extended the weekday enforcement hours of parking meters to 8pm and even extended the enforcement to Saturdays. However, with your Phoenix Film and Digital Media Permit the Film Office can hood meters which will allow you to park your essential vehicles there all day (if necessary). And the cost to you? FREE! We offer this service to promote and encourage filming in downtown Phoenix.
All you need to do is create placards to go on the dashboards of the vehicles parking at the meters so the Meter Maid knows you are authorized to be there.
Submissions for the third Trailer Festival are now open.
The first two festivals were attended by industry only and included Fox, Disney, Paramount and PBS. All the trailers were then placed in an Online Screening Room and for a year after the event Hollywood managers, producers and distributors logged in to view fllmmakers' work. They subsequently requested over 200 DVDs and scripts, with 11 deals being made. Please visit the Success Stories page on our website for more information www.thetrailerfestival.com.
We will be taking submissions until 31st July, 2012. Submission fees are $30 until 31st March.

IFP Presents: 2-DAY WORKSHOP: Ten Lessons for the Writer / Producer
January 28 and February 4, 2012: This mid-level to advanced session in two parts, with the first day emphasizing the basics of screenwriting with the focus on real world considerations. On the second day, you'll don your "producer" hat and take a critical look at your own work to discover what makes it a marketable and shootable script.
Screenwriter and educator Yannis Skiotes leads you on an in-depth journey through the development and marketing of your screenplay. You'll get the most benefit from attending both sessions, but we have tickets for attending either day for those who schedules may not allow both days.
Dates: Saturday, January 28, 2012 and February 4, 2012
Time: 1:00pm - 5pm (each day)
Location: Collins College 14th Street Studio Theater, 1425 W 14th Street, Tempe, Arizona.
Cost:
Both days: $70/IFP Phoenix Members, $100/Non-Members.
Either day: $40/IFP Phoenix Members, $55/Non-Members.
Day 1
The first day, we'll cover the "fundamentals from the POV of Yannis", i.e. a fresh and insightful look at what you (the writer) should already at least be familiar with: fleshing out your idea into a story, following the 3-act structure, developing your characters and making the most of screenplay formatting standards. While these may all sound like basic premises, you should have at least a mid[level knowledge of screenwriting to best appreciate this session. It will enhance, solidify and focus you as a writer before moving on to the next step in your career, as a producer!
Day 2
The second day will be more advanced and focus on having the writer think like a producer so that s/he looks at the work as a marketable asset. To get your script ready to be produced, you must take that giant leap into understanding what it means to be "shootable". What works and does not work in a visual medium? What market factors drive the trajectory of your screenplay? Are you writing for yourself? Or writing for the world to watch? Let Yanni put you on the path to commercial success!

On January 19th, the IFP Phoenix Screenwriters Group welcomes writer/director/producer Jon Bonnell to speak about the process of working with the director/producer on re-writes.
So you've optioned/sold your screenplay, congratulations! However, you aren't quite done yet. Now the work begins! This is a collaborative business and its time to collaborate with producer and director to help facilitate the re-write process. Reasons could be anything from creative choices wanted by the director, business needs from the producer, or even requirements by the distributor. In any case, there will be changes to be made, and as the writer you'll want to make sure they are done right. We'll discuss how to survive this process and see it through to the end, because if you don't they might just hand it off to someone else to write.

SIDES New Updating Schedule
Starting with this posting, SIDES will only be updated once a week, usually towards the end of the week (usually on Thursdays)
Phoenix Film Office On-Line Production Manual
Effective 12/13/11, the Phoenix Film Office will no longer maintain the On-Line Production Manual. While the manual has been around for almost 30 years, many listed there have not updated their listing thus old information (such as old phone numbers and email addresses) populate the directory. After several complaints from Producers about the issue, and the Phoenix Film Office's lacking the ability to continually track people down, the decision has been made to end the listing service.
All producers will now be directed to the Arizona Production Association which offers a state-wide listing service.

The More You Know – Notes From The Film Office
Filming Along Light Rail Lines
Did you know that filming along the Light Rail route or affecting traffic around the light rail for your shoot is strongly discouraged?
The Phoenix Film Office has recently received several requests to film along or near the Light Rail. Unfortunately, per a directive from Phoenix PD, film shoots that are along or near the Light Rail tracks which could potentially affect traffic patterns are more than likely not permitted.
For example: A production company is a block away from the Light Rail tracks and would like to perform ITC in order to film a car running a red light at an intersection. While the intersection may be a block away from the tracks, depending on the time of day, the ITC may cause cars to backup onto the Light Rail tracks a block away. This would then interfere with the progress of the Light Rail.
Of course every situation is different, so please check with the Film Office when you first begin to make plans to film on or around Light Rail!

The More You Know – Notes From the Film Office
CITY RATES
The City of Phoenix does not charge location fees to film on our properties (unless it is a revenue generating facility such as the Phoenix Convention Center or Orpheum Theatre).
That being said, often times you will be required to hire, in an off-duty capacity, a city of Phoenix employee. It is import to know these costs ahead of time and budget accordingly. Following is a brief summary of the most common charges a production will face (go to the “City Policies” on the left navigational bar for more detailed information):
Phoenix Police: $40/hr with a 3 hour minimum
Park Ranger: $30/hr with a 3 hour minimum
Aviation Supervisor: $45/hr with a 3 hour minimum
Since the Police will be using official vehicles with your shoot, there is a slight rental fee. This charge is generally $5/hour rental for the motorcycle and $0.65/mile which is billed from Police Fiscal.
Please contact the Phoenix Film Office for a more concise estimate of your costs as every shoot is different and requires different staffing.
