First Saturday Monthly
HERITAGE SATURDAYS--  Learn while having fun making a piece of history. Bring the whole family to Historic Heritage Square located at 7th St. and Monroe (1 block. South of Van Buren in downtown Phoenix) for these historical craft programs every first Saturday of the month, (except January and August) between 12 – 2 p.m. Programs held in the Hands-On-Heritage House. HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE--  Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. This participatory exhibit space is also the headquarters of our scheduled school tours and Heritage Saturday activities. ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS--  Become a Junior Archaeologist! Learn about the science of archaeology and the Hohokam people by participating in a simulated excavation of a Hohokam pithouse. Actual Hohokam artifacts are used in this program. Classes are generally October - May, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and are divided by age (ages 7-11 first Saturday, 10-14 third Saturday). Advance registration required. Specially arranged workshops are available for groups of ten or more. NORTH MOUNTAIN VISITOR’S CENTER INTREPERATIVE HIKE #62754-- Enjoy a guided hike in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve with a Park Steward. Learn about the flora and fauna and the natural and human history of the area. Hike is easy to moderate and approx. 2.25 miles in length. FEE: Adults $10, Seniors $5, Youth $5. BEGINNING BIRDER CLASSES: FEATHERS, EGGS, NESTS--  Through a combination of class and field time, skilled birder, Kathe Anderson, will help teach you all the basics of birding. FREE. INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY – THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS -- The City of Phoenix Rio Salado Habitat and partners Audubon Arizona, Arizona Game and Fish Department are proud to present the 4th Annual International Migratory Bird Day.  Enjoy bird walks, educational presentations, Photomark camera workshop, REI binocular clinic and raffle, kid crafts, and games. SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February.  North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. PARK OF THER FOUR WATERS TOUR- #62728-- The Hohokam people lived in the Salt River area from approximately AD 450 to AD 1450. They were an agricultural society, growing corns, beans, squash and cotton. In order to support their extensive agricultural system, the Hohokam people constructed miles of canals in order to direct water from the Salt River to their fields. The Park of Four Waters tour will take you on a tour through undeveloped, natural desert to the ruins of some of these canal systems. This tour is Free with General Museum Admission. EL DIA DE LOS NIÑOS: CELEBRATES ALL CHILDREN--  The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s Latino Institute will celebrate the joys and wonders of childhood, regardless of linguistic and cultural background. The city will honor its most valuable asset, its children, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Margaret T. Hance Park at Second Street and Moreland. Admission is FREE. This day is set aside to promote the importance of literacy and education for children. More than 50 booths hosted by schools, colleges, youth and nonprofit organizations, and city libraries will offer interactive games, hands-on art activities, a reading village, live entertainment, giveaways and lots of fun. El Dia de los Niños is observed in 72 cities across the United States and in more than 120 countries as a day to celebrate children and to promote a sense of understanding among young people of all nations. Fourth Sunday, Monthly
SILENT SUNDAY RETURNS EACH MONTH IN 2010-- (Fourth Sunday of the month): On Silent Sundays, bicyclists, tots in strollers, in-line skaters and wheelchair users get to call the Park's roadways their own. Starting at 5 a.m. the park's roadways past the Central Avenue gate will be reserved for non-motorized use. South Mountain Park is located at 10919 S. Central Avenue. 602 495-5811.
