HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE-- The new free companion museum of the 1895 Rosson House is now open. Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. This participatory exhibit space is also the headquarters of our scheduled school tours and Heritage Saturday activities. TEN TO THE END HIKE #62788-- Join us for this 10.8 mile hike on the Christiansen Trail (#100) from Tatum Blvd to Mt. View Park at 7th Ave and Peoria through the beautiful Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Due to the length of this hike it is rated as moderate to difficult. Elevation gain is moderate over rocky trail. Shuttle service is included in the fee. SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February. North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. STONE ART & TOOLS WORKSHOP 60912-- The Hohokam culture used a variety of stone tools for harvesting, building, and more. In this workshop instructor Vincent Pinto, leads participants in a hands-on workshop on crafting and using a wide variety of stone hunter-gatherer tools. Participants will learn how to scavenge existing tools in the landscape (non-artifacts) and then progress to making their own stone tool kit. The kit will include: stone knife, stone saw, digging stick, animal trap trigger, plant rope, a woven pouch, a pecked stone bowl, an awl, a hand-drill fire set and more! 9 A.M.-3 P.M. Fee. Silent Sunday returns each month in 2010!! (Fourth Sunday of the month): On Silent Sundays, bicyclists, tots in strollers, in-line skaters and wheelchair users get to call the Park's roadways their own. Starting at 5 a.m. the park's roadways past the Central Avenue gate* will be reserved for non-motorized use.
