First Saturday Monthly
HERITAGE SATURDAYS--  Make and take vintage crafts.  Bring the whole family to the Carriage House at Historic Heritage Square, 7th St. and Monroe (1 block. South of Van Buren in downtown Phoenix). HANDS-ON HERITAGE HOUSE--  The new free companion museum of the 1895 Rosson House is now open. Come join fun historical hands-on activities and exhibits inside the California bungalow style Stevens-Haustgen House. Look through a stereoscope, try your hand at old fashioned games, investigate the tools of kitchen and laundry duties over 100 years ago and more. This participatory exhibit space is also the headquarters of our scheduled school tours and Heritage Saturday activities. The Hands-On Heritage House, (602)534-9382, is open Wednesday - Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday Noon – 4 p.m. Closed Easter Sunday. ROCK CLIMING: 61936-- Experienced or not, come out to the Phoenix Rock Gym Tuesday nights to climb. This accessible climbing program is open to anyone who has ever wanted to rock-climb. Don't have any equipment? Don't worry, all equipment is provided by Phoenix Rock Gym. All climbers will be supervised by experienced Daring Adventures and Phoenix Rock Gym staff. This program is safe and fun for everyone. A mandatory orientation will be set up for all climbers and volunteers. We will meet Thursday nights starting February 2 to March 9 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at: Phoenix Rock Gym 1353 E. University Dr. Tempe, AZ 85281 Orientation for all climbing volunteers will be on January 26 at Phoenix Rock Gym from 5:30 to 7:00pm. AFRICAN AMERICAN VIBES OF THE CITY: “MIXED MEDIA ART EXHIBITION”--  The Parks and Recreation Department’s Center for the Arts will open an exciting exhibit featuring both two and three dimensional works of art from prominent valley artists. The exhibit will open with a free first Friday’s gallery reception from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the 11th annual exhibit and will highlight new and former mixed media artists.  Participants will be able to view a variety of paintings, drawings, metals, ceramics, and photography.  The Phoenix Center for the Arts is located at 1202 North 3rd St.  Participants will be able to tour the gallery, meet the artists, listen to live music, enjoy free refreshments, and visit art booths.  Additional information is available on-line at: http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/phxctr.html   or by calling (602) 262-4627.

MORNING HORSEBACK RIDE: 60226--  Participants must bring their own horse and tack. Enjoy scenic mountain views when you join Park Rangers for a ride in the beautiful Phoenix Mountains Preserve. The ride will leave from Dreamy Draw Park and cover the Perl Charles Trail and parts of the Christiansen Trail. MOTORING THRU TIME -- Where the transportation past meets the future! LIBERTY WILDLIFE PRESENTS BIRDS OF PREY -60687-- Get up close and personal with some of the fascinating animals that thrive in the Sonoran Desert. Liberty Wildlife, a local conservation group that rehabilitates native wildlife, will bring the desert to life during a 45-minute presentation with live animals and exciting information on wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education, research, and conservation services. RAPTER RAP- 60588-- There back! Migrating raptors! Join Rio Rangers, Liberty Wildlife, and Tom Gaskill as we teach you all about these predators of the sky. Spotting scopes, binoculars, and experienced birders will be on hand to assist you in identifying these birds of prey soaring overhead. And for your viewing pleasure live raptors, brought to you by Liberty Wildlife, will be on site allowing you to see them up close and personal. EXPANDED SILENT SUNDAYS TO NORTH MOUNTAIN PARK-- Cyclists, skateboarders, wheelchair users and stroller-riding tots will soon get to call the roads of North Mountain Park their own one day each month when the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department expands it’s popular Silent Sunday event to the area beginning in February.  North Mountain Park, 10600 N. 7th Street, will host Silent Sundays from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Vehicles will park in the lot at the Havasupai Ramada reserving the park’s roadways for non-motorized use. Trailhead access sites outside of the park will remain open to vehicles. Silent Sunday dates for 2010 are: Jan. 10, Feb. 14, March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 12, Nov. 14, Dec. 12. For more information call (602) 495-5506.

OSTRISH EGG WATER CANTEEN WORKSHOP: 60911-- Cultures throughout the world utilized their environment to make unique items in various ancient technologies. Cultures, like those native to Botswana, used items such as ostrich eggs. Historically, ostriches were raised in Arizona beginning about the turn of the century. This workshop, with instructor Vincent Pinto, fuses a number of skills into one amazing result - a beautiful and functional water container made from the world's largest egg. Each participant will learn about the traditional uses of ostrich eggs and then craft their own water jug to take home. Along the way they will make a shoulder sling for the canteen, crafted of plant rope of their own making. Mineral paints will be used to adorn the egg with scrimshaw along with buckskin, shells and other natural objects. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Community Room & Patio - Pueblo Grande Museum. Fee.  4619 E. HUNGER MOON AND SUNSET HIKE #60682-- Your Hunger for hiking by the light of the moon will be fulfilled! Start the hike off with a magnificent sunset and watch the moon rise over South Mountain. This hike will be approximately 4.6 miles round-trip. Hike pace will be steady with short, infrequent stops along the way. This hike is rated at intermediate level because of the distance, rocky terrain, night sight and elevation gain/loss. What to bring: A flashlight or headlamp Hike description: This hike is best suited for adults and children 13 and above. The hike will include rocky uphill and downhill sections. BIKE RIGHT!  60590— Think you have riding a bike all figured out? Come see if you can jump over obstacles, stop on a dime, and the skill of riding on dirt trails. Come join us as we teach you the science of balance, how to fix a flat, and maneuvering your bike in tricky situations. What to wear/bring: closed-toed shoes, water bottle, bike, and bike helmet. IHOOPS SKILLS CHALLENGE: BASKETBALL COMPETITION--  Longview Neighborhood Recreation Center is proud to be the Phoenix location where area kids can show off their basketball skills.  Boys and girls from 9 to 14 are eligible to participant in this free event from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The skills competition provides participants an opportunity to showcase their basketball talents in a time-based, half court obstacle course.  First place winners will have the opportunity to advance to one of twenty-nine regional competitions occurring in NBA team markets across the country with the possibility of advancing to the National Finals in Orlando, Florida. Participants may register the day of the event and must bring a copy of their birth certificate with a completed registration/waiver form.  The Longview Recreation Center is located 4040 North 14th Street, southeast corner of 14th Street and Indian School Road. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING: ADAPTIVE- 61937--  Come to Flagstaff with Daring Adventures to go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. We will be leaving at 8 a.m. from Telephone Pioneer Park located at 1946 W. Morningside Dr. Phoenix, on February 27 and return the night of February 28. Fee includes transportation from Telephone Pioneer Park to Flagstaff and back, hotel room, equipment rental, lunch, and breakfast will be provided. Participants will need to bring money for dinner Saturday and Sunday night. A mandatory orientation will be on February 10 at Telephone Pioneer Park from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Also, a training session will be held on February 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Rose Mofford Sports Complex, 9850 N. 23rd Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85021, just south of Peoria Ave. Hurry, registration ends January 29. Fourth Sunday, Monthly
Silent Sunday returns each month in 2010!!
