About Us
The mythical Phoenix bird rising from the flames is symbolic of
the growth of the city of Phoenix. The Police Department has also
grown, with many technological and procedural improvements, since
the city was incorporated in 1881.
In the early years of local law enforcement, officers had to rely
on bells and flashing lights to alert them to respond to street
corner call boxes. In 1932, the department installed the first police
radio system in Arizona, using radio call letters KGZJ. In the 1950's,
the department changed to more modern equipment, using KOA789 as
new call letters, in use now for the past 40 years. The department
is forging into the new millennium with the technologically advanced
800MHZ Trunked Radio System that will meet the needs of the Police
Department for years to come.
